Ellesmere Lake
is a rather small and unheard of town in Nova Scotia, Canada. Ellesmere is the home of about two thousand people, but a quarter of those people aren't normal. And, although Ellesmere is fairly unheard of, it seems to attract a lot of dark looking mysterious strangers.
Ellesmere Lake is a fairly independent town, benefits of being so small and secluded. Most of their food comes from the farms and the nearby Lake Ellesmere, or from hunting in the forests surrounding the town.
There is a general store, a clothing store, and a small business from which a man buys needed goods off the internet.
There is a swimming pool and a big playground. Children attend the same school, hosted in a fairly big and airy building.
However...
As long as history has been recorded in Ellesmere, the town's population has remained around a constant number of 1,938-1,958. Never more, never less. No one has cared to investigate this though.
The Critters.
Exactly two hundred and fifty of Ellesmere's adult citizens are critters. What is a critter? If you look at a critter and a normal human, you won't be able to find any obvious differences. You could dissect them and still find no obvious flaws. However, if you were to kill an adult Critter and they had no child to replace them, you may notice that somewhere in the world, natural disasters have started occurring. Earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis... Until a baby critter has been born to replace the deceased, this area of the world will be a complete disaster zone.
Why, you ask? Because these Critters are intricately linked to the health of the world, for some unknown reason. Maybe it's a work of god...
Critters are unaware that they are Critters, and it is against Angel law to inform them of their extreme importance in the world.
The angels.
And if they were made by a god, then that god was wise and also placed two hundred and fifty guardian angels on Earth. These angels look a lot like humans also, but they have oddly sharp shoulder blades. During puberty, young angels tend to have problems keeping their secret wings from sprouting out to their full span of eight to thirteen feet, but after that, they all become fairly good at retracting their wings, which somehow fold up under the skin of their back and look completely normal.
Each angel is assigned a critter at birth, and their mission is to protect this critter. Usually, the angels end up being the critter's best friend and they naturally spend a lot of time together. Angels are stronger than humans. They can fly small distances with their wings unsheathed and are particularly strong in hand-to-hand combat. Also, they have the ability to heal minor natural wounds of the critter they protect, unless the wounds have been inflicted by a Dark Angel.
Angels have a different form of marriage. They are bonded in a ceremony by the Head Angel, and from that point on, are on a never-to-be-broken cycle. Paired- married- angels have a connection that allows them to sense the emotions of the other and if one tries to be with another angel, they will have feel the sensation of burning. They do not have to live with their partners though, and this bond is also helpful, as it keeps the paired close together and the angels have found hat since paired angels know each other so well, there has never been a case in which the paired don't feel at least some affection for each other.
It is completely and utterly forbidden for an angel to fall in love or marry a critter.
No one has ever cared about the humans though, and over the many centuries the angels have been on earth, their blood has slowly diluted amongst the town. As long as the angel does not tell the human about being an angel, marriage is acceptable. If a human and an angel were to marry and have children, only one would end up with wings and angel powers. How? It's unknown, but the angel population remains at a steady 250. Consequentially, part of the angel blood is lost in these pairings.
Dark angels.
And again, no one knows how the dark angels came to be on earth either. Maybe they were fallen angels, maybe the devil sent them, maybe they were a product of evolution. Either way, they're here now, and they're stronger than the angels, probably because they are all 100% dark angel, no measly human blood mixed in. They have slight telekinetic type powers, and can use their eyes and minds as types of lasers to cut open skin. This attack can be blocked it the victim is concentrating their mind on blocking the attack, but it can easily kill a victim caught unaware.
So, remember how the angel blood is slowly being diluted?
The current leader (Canon, he's open for someone to play him!) is over 80% angel-blooded, and very powerful. He is a rather popular leader too, and most people like him and don't mind the fact the whole Angel Council bows to his will most of the time.
Until, one day, they found letters in their mailbox...
A lot of angels laughed this off, taking it to be a joke, but the head angel knew it was no laughing matter.
Now, all the angels that have no plans to wed are finding themselves receiving letters, declaring them to angels they dislike, angels they have crushed on for years, and there's the factor of Critters loving angels also...
And so our story begins.
This originated out of a story my friend and I are writing.
