Even if I lose the game, I'm all in... "One toasted sandwich con cheese and bacon, coming right up!" said Skipper, repeating the order just in case he had misheard or forgotten the order. He turned to the large fridge and pulled out a packet of bacon and one of cheese, and started getting to work on slicing up cheese. He used one hand to wield the knife, continuing to eat his own sandwich with the other.
"Tom's up in..." Skipper started to answer Sera's question, but then realized to his embarrassment that he had forgotten the name of the farm up north. "Some forest place up north," he continued, waving the hand with his sandwich up and around in the air as if there was a map there. With a glint of amusement in his eyes, he continued, "He's meeting a lady friend. And I'm saving up to buy a new motor boat, so I jumped at the opportunity to work. Plus, I like this place. I'd like to take over for Tom when he retires." Finishing the cheese, he placed strips of bacon across a piece of bread, buttered a second piece, put the whole thing together, and took it over to the grill machine. "That'll be five minutes or so and two dollars, please." He didn't bother to ring the sandwich up on the till; unless she planned on buying something else, one sandwich with two toppings was an easy calculation, even for one who rarely went to school.

Sera rummaged in her bag and found the money - it was quite a good price, really. She thought that it was slightly strange to want to buy a motor boat; but then, they did live next to a lake, so it made sense. She placed the money on the counter for Skipper to pick up when he had a free hand to do so.
The smells of melting cheese, grilling bacon and toasting bread made her realise how hungry she was: it must have been at least six hours since she'd had breakfast, as she's gotten up early to go to the angel headquarters. And she'd been procrastinating ever since. Sera decided to go there as soon as she had finished her lunch. Her stomach grumbled in anticipation. She blushed a little and hoped that Skipper was too far away to hear - she always found it so embarassing when her stomach made weird noises.

Even if I lose the game, I'm all in... Skipper wondered what she was thinking as she found the money, and deftly scooped it up into the palm of his hand, surveying it for a tip before hitting a key on the old-fashioned cash register and watching it pop open. He sorted the money into the register, and smiled his thanks at her. It was nice to know some customers came to the store.
Alas, Skipper was not far enough away, and heard Sera's stomach rumbling. He looked up at the ceiling for a moment, but saw no pipes bursting, and then realized it was her stomach and laughed. "Are you hungry?" he asked. He watched the grill, impatient as always for it to finish its processes, and returned to the counter, picking up his sandwich from where he had put it earlier. The smell was wafting up around his nose and he felt hungry also. "I hate waiting for sandwiches to cook," he said, feeling as if he should start a conversation but unsure what to talk about.

Sera winced slightly - so he had heard her stomach. She giggled embarassedly. "Yeah, I am quite hungry," she replied, shifting her weight from one foot to the other, not sure exactly what to say. She hated awkward silences. "Uh... yeah" she agreed, when Skipper commented on the cooking time of sandwiches. Obviously he felt the awkward silence brewing too, seeing as he was making a slightly odd conversation. She started to wander around the store, regarding the shelves of nick-nacks and groceries curiously. Brushing her fingers over a packet of Angel' Delight chocolate dessert, she was reminded once again of the looming predicament that she was in. The shop was a nice distraction from visiting the angel headquarters, but she knew that it had to be her next destination. She wasn't looking forwards to it.

Do you think you can cope? "Well," said Skipper in response to her confession. "You'll enhoy this sandwich a lot then. They're very good for hungry tummies, a good source of energy, and very tasty..." His pointless comments trailed off as he watched her start to roam around the shop. He noticed she seemed a bit anxious, and watched as she roamed around the isles.
"Are you looking for anything in particular?" he asked, feeling like he was failing in his work. There wasn't much he could really do to be helpful, yet he still felt as if he should be. Behind him, he heard the cheese start to sizzle. "You seem worried." Thinking about that a bit more, he added, "A lot of people have lately, actually."

"Uuuhhhh..." Sera was unsure of what to say. She couldn't very well tell him the truth, which meant that she had to come up with a lie double time. Oh no, but it had to sound believable - she didn't want him to think that she was lying, even if she was. As her brain raced, she realised that she'd paused too long and now whatever she said it was going to sound like a lie.
"Well, just... y'know. I've got to go to a... meeting-thing after this and I'm not really looking forwards to it," she said meekly, hoping that he would enquire into it any more - she had no idea what she'd say in response!
